But what you apparently don't realize is that product keys are unique to the TYPE of Windows that they were supplied with. That is, your laptop came with a copy of Windows and a product key. But that is an OEM product key, and it WILL NOT WORK (physically) with the files from a RETAIL copy of Windows.

Can I use another XP disk to install the OS but use the product key code assigned to the organization by MS for the cracked CD? Perhaps something in the installation files of the XP disk is looking for a specific product key. In this case, entering a different, but valid, key would not work. Does anyone know?

The Vista product key alone makes the difference as to whether you have an upgrade edition or full. My recommendation is to buy the Vista Ultimate upgrade edition. It does NOT work the same way as it does when using the 32bit dvd. You will NOT be instructed to run Setup from the existing Windows desktop.
